BENEFITS AND FEATURES

Because we understand the realities of what a livestock farmer faces on a daily basis,
we created a cost-effective solution tailored to the needs of farmers.

INSTANT ALARM
CALLS ON YOUR PHONE

Just like our standard collars, the Satellite Collars provide instant alarm calls during potential theft or predator incidents.

LIVE GPS TRACKING
DURING AN ALARM

Just like our standard collars, the Satellite Collars allows LIVE GPS tracking via the app during an alarm.

NO NETWORK/CELLULAR
RECEPTION NEEDED

Powered by Iridium Satellites, the collars ensure live communication as long as they have an open sky view (not under a roof), even in areas with weak or no cellular reception.

RECHARGE BATTERY
EVERY 6-8 MONTHS

Our Satellite collars are equipped with a solar panel for supplemental charging, although the collar will still need manual charging, every now and then, especially during winter. You can check the battery status of every device, directly from the app.

FAQ'S element

Even though the Satellite collar was designed as an alternative that can work in areas of weak or even no cellular reception, it can work anywhere, even in areas of very strong reception.

Yes, just like our standard collars, the satellite collars give instant alarm calls during theft or predator incidents, along with LIVE GPS tracking during an alarm. You will still receive daily reports and location updates. You would still need to charge the collar before use etc. Note: Geofences are not included, but coming soon.

Unfortunately not yet, however the addition is in our pipeline and will be made available at the end of next year. Once available, it will merely be a software upgrade which can be done remotely, so no need to remove or send in your unit to become geofence enabled.

The antenna (box with the solar panel) has to be placed on the top of the animal’s neck and be in open sky view to reliably give notifications. This means, if the unit is under a roof, then no notifications will be sent to the app.

If the animal with the Satellite collar walks in an area with dense trees or next to buildings with high walls, notifications such as daily reports may also be interrupted, however, alarms will not be missed given the ongoing nature of alarm notifications.

The solar panel provides supplemental charging to extend battery life. You will still need to remove the collar and charge it as with our standard collars. Of course, how much the solar panel supplements charging is weather dependent, being more effective during summer than winter. However, we rigorously tested the collar with its solar panel in Patagonia’s harsh snow conditions, ensuring its effectiveness in extreme weather.

If a software upgrade needs to be done, it can be done remotely via the app. The farmer merely needs to be within 50m of the collar to complete the upgrade on the app via bluetooth – with just a click of the button. The collar can even be left on the animal.

The hardware for the Satellite collar and satellite data is very expensive. To give you an idea, the data costs scale to about R25 million per gig. The electronic components for satellite communication are also much more expensive than normal components. Furthermore, the activation cost, which we have absorbed, is also very expensive.

Despite the high costs of manufacturing and supporting these collars, we’ve worked tirelessly to keep the price as affordable as possible.

FarmRanger Satellite Collars are now available at R8,350 per collar (excluding VAT), with a monthly subscription of R650 (excluding VAT).

No, these collars are specifically designed for sheep and will not fit on cattle. However our cattle satellite collar will be available next year so keep an eye out for that product release.
