Introducing the FarmRanger Satellite Collar for Cattle and Horses
The FarmRanger Satellite Collar for Cattle and Horses offers a solution to livestock theft and predator attacks in areas with poor or no mobile network coverage. Using industry leading satellite technology, our Satellite Collar offers the same 24/7 monitoring and live tracking on the FarmRanger app during alarms – no mobile network coverage required.
The Satellite Collar for Cattle and Horses has the same rugged casing as our standard cattle collar, and also has a solar panel for extended battery life.

BENEFITS AND FEATURES
Because we understand the realities of what a livestock farmer faces on a daily basis, we created a cost-effective solution tailored to the needs of farmers.

INSTANT ALARM
CALLS ON YOUR PHONE
Just like our standard collars, the Satellite Collar for Cattle and Horses senses when livestock is startled, and offers instant alarm calls on your phone during theft or predator attacks.

LIVE GPS TRACKING
DURING AN ALARM
As with our standard collars, the Satellite Collar for Cattle and Horses provides LIVE GPS tracking via the FarmRanger mobile app during alarms.

NO NETWORK/CELLULAR
RECEPTION NEEDED
Powered by the Iridium Satellites, the collars communicate real-time in open sky environments (see below), even in areas with poor or no mobile network coverage.

RECHARGE BATTERY
EVERY 6-8 MONTHS
Our satellite collars are equipped with a solar panel for supplemental charging, allowing 6-8 months battery life between charges. You can check battery status on the FarmRanger app.

MORE QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Yes – in order to fit neck sizes for most breeds, the collar length can be adjusted from 80cm (circle of 25cm diameter) to 120cm (circle of 38cm diameter).
The main difference is that the satellite collar does not require cellular network coverage. The satellite collar has a solar panel for longer battery life between charges, can do fewer daily periodic location updates and does not accommodate the geofencing function.
As with the standard collars, the satellite collar senses the movement of the animal it is fitted to and thus by extension the herd. In the event that abnormal animal movement is detected, the user will receive an alerting phone call (up to 2 designated users mobile phones) and in-app notifications. The user can track the animal movement live on the FarmRanger app and can extend the live tracking as needed.
No – the satellite collar works in areas with no or weak cellular network coverage.
The satellite collar needs an open sky view in order to work; for example, when fitted to an animal in a camp. The satellite collar will not work if used indoors, under a metal roof, or extremely dense vegetation.
The satellite collar has a solar panel which augments the rechargeable battery. For typical use during summer time no charging is required; during winter times it might be necessary to charge the collar 1-2 times. The battery level can be monitored on the FarmRanger app.
The satellite collar utilises the Iridium satellite network, which has generally been the premium option for real-time satellite communication. Specialised hardware and connectivity packages are required for access to this network, which is included in the hardware and monthly subscription cost. The collar cost and monthly fee is comparable to other devices (e.g. Garmin inReach Satellite Communicator) offering portable, real- time satellite communication.
It is also worth noting that the cost of our satellite collars in most cases is less than that of a compatible system using its own base stations.
Please do, but make sure you do a thorough comparison. A critical function for collars using satellite connectivity is the real-time nature of the satellite service. While FarmRanger satellite collars communicate real-time and offer live tracking, some collars use satellite services that only offer position updates every few hours, making live tracking impossible.
We understand that determining cellphone reception in your area can be challenging. That’s why we offer the option to trade in your existing collar for a satellite collar within the first three months.
Under normal conditions such as a clear sky view, intact collar and a charged battery, the collar should always communicate successfully with the app. However, temporary issues can occasionally interfere with communication. For example, the collar’s sky view might be blocked by another animal, or the animal may be temporarily sheltered under a steel roof. In such cases, the collar will pause and retry reporting its location to the app.
If the collar fails to report to the app multiple times in a row, please contact FarmRanger support for assistance.
The satellite connectivity data plan allows for 12 daily periodic location updates. Please contact us should you require more frequent periodic location updates.
